Step-by-step guide

How to make true or false questions

Write one short statement about one fact, then decide if it is true or false. A good true or false question tests a single idea, has no trick wording, and is clearly true or clearly false when you check it against the material.

  1. Pick one fact from your material

Good sources are definitions, dates, causes and effects, and key terms. Each question should test one idea only.

  2. Write it as a short, plain statement

Use simple sentences. Avoid double negatives such as “It is not untrue that…”, because they test reading, not knowledge.

  3. Make false statements by changing one detail

Swap a name, a number, or a key term so the statement becomes clearly false. Do not make it false with a hidden technicality.

  4. Avoid giveaway words

Words like “always”, “never” and “all” usually signal a false answer, and “sometimes” or “usually” signal a true one.

  5. Balance and check your answers

Use about as many true statements as false ones, and check every answer against the source before you share the quiz.

True or false examples
  • Weak example: Photosynthesis never happens at night and always needs sunlight.

Two ideas in one statement, plus the absolute words “never” and “always”.

  • Better example: Plants release oxygen during photosynthesis.

The answer is true. One clear fact.

  • Weak example: It is not true that the human heart does not have four chambers.

A double negative makes it hard to read.

  • Better example: The human heart has three chambers.

The answer is false: the heart has four chambers. One changed number makes it false.

Or generate them from your material

Paste text, upload a PDF, or add a YouTube link, choose true or false questions, and QuizRise drafts the statements and the answer key. Review and edit each one, then share it or print it with an answer key.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start from a true statement, then make the false version by changing one key detail: a name, a number, a key term, or the main verb.
Keep each statement to a single idea, and avoid double negatives and absolute words such as "always" and "never", because they test reading instead of knowledge.

A good false statement is clearly false when you check it against the material, not false because of a hidden technicality.

This is very variable. Ten questions may be enough to test your listeners' general understanding of a topic, which suits short checks for understanding during a lesson. But if you want to check their knowledge at a deeper level, ask 20-25 questions.
